You’ve probably heard claims that a daily meditation practice can declutter and rid your life of unwanted stress. I can tell you from personal experience that it reduces anxiety and worry, regulates emotions, boosts immunity and even increases libido. Score!
Why not add all those benefits to something you hopefully do most days anyway – taking a shower.
What is shower meditation?
Shower meditation is a simple and effective way to incorporate meditation into your daily routine. It’s a form of mindfulness that encourages you to focus on the present moment and the sensations of the shower.
How to practice shower meditation
Stand under the shower faucet and let the water run over your body. Take a deep breath in and exhale out slowly. Now, close your eyes and bring your attention to the sensations of the water droplets and steam enveloping you, using this as an anchor to bring your mind into the present moment. Everything, in the present moment is safe.
Using your senses
Shower meditation is considered a mindfulness practice because it helps bring your attention to the present moment. Using your senses to get plugged into what is going on inside the tiny space of your shower can help you tap into a clear, calm mindset.
If your mind happens to wonder into negative territory, no worries. Use your senses to gently bring yourself back to the present moment and the sensations of the shower. Notice what you smell, feel, hear and see (even if your eyes are closed).
Using imagery to wash away your stress
You can also add a layer of imagery to your shower meditation to help the stress and worry melt away. As the water showers down over you, imagine your stress washing down the drain. Starting from the top of your head, all the way to the tips of your toes. The healing power of water is washing over you and cleansing you of any unhelpful, bothersome thoughts.
